I read this piece about a newly discovered (adorable) species…

Match-tip tiny, Brookesia micra (juvenile pictured) is the smallest of four new chameleon species found on the African island country of Madagascar. With an average adult length of just over an inch (2.9 centimeters) from snout to tail, B. micra is among the tiniest reptiles in the world.

Funny how they never thank the LORD for all of the species that have gone extinct.

And while that man/woman is at it he should thank his god for ebola, dengue fever and malaria and a thousand more nasty “creations”

I have often wondered whythose who choose not to believe, that I have no right to thank God for the wonders of life. There are things which are horrible, sad and inexplicable. This does not mean they were created by God. We should be thankful there are people of science, secular and non-secular who can find the cures even if it takes a very long time. I wish I had the answer to why these things occur, one day I will. I have for awhile watched these blogs, and sadly I am aware I will be persecuted, scorned, ridiculed and probably cussed at. It has occurred to me I can no longer not comment despite that which is to come. It seems to me, because you and your friends are atheist your right to belittle, to be fowl and even cruel far out weighs my right to smile and openly, quietly, and sincerely be thankful to my God. Do not the same First Amendment rights pertain to me? This is not theology, but faith. My faith in God is no less incredulous than your faith in no god. I thank you, I love you and I forgive all of you for what I am certain shall follow. Peace be to you.

From myself, and many other non-theists, I can attest that we would not and do not seek to persecute Christians, or any other religious group. We aim to create a religiously neutral government, and support free-speech. Sometimes, understandably, criticisms of religion are taken very personally and hurt the person who holds the beliefs, but that is not the aim of the criticism. I welcome you to comment, and encourage you to keep reading.

      Kim,

No one claimed that you, or the individual who was quoted in the blog post, have no right to “thank God for the wonders of life.” The first amendment applies to all citizens equally, and I, personally, encourage you to speak your mind.

The first amendment does not, however, protect us from disagreement, criticism, or even ridicule and hostility.

Is it a stretch that I find this worldview snuggly compatible with, say, strapping a dog to the roof of a car rather than into a seatbelt in the back seat? The notion that every plant and animal on this earth, and beyond, was given to us for our “enjoyment” seems not only egotistical, but degrading to every non-human species. Wasn’t it CS Lewis who, speaking of time, warned against the notion of “mine” becoming akin to “mine to destroy”?

That this tiny creature must be seen, by some, as a gift in order to inspire amazement is simply sad.
