Zombies & Atheism
Zombies and atheism? What is this, a bad joke about Jesus returning from the dead? No. This is a short tale about finding inspiration in odd places. In early July 2011, a good friend turned me on to Mira Grant’s Newsflesh trilogy, a brilliant thriller combining politics, blogging, and a zombie apocalypse; it was the [...]
On Closets & Doorknobs
It’s been three weeks since my last blog post. I’ve a lot to say, and while plenty of it is stuffed into the following blog post, there is a lot more material coming your way… It’s only been six months since penning the blog post where I formally ‘came out’ of the atheist closet; titled Seven [...]
Unveiling Marriage
Laura & Rob, members of the Houston Atheists, chose to renew their wedding vows this past Saturday afternoon. The beautiful secular ceremony took place at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Houston and included a dedication to their son. This celebration of their commitment to each other included realistic vows that recognized the reality of [...]
Catalyst
The last five months of my life have been an absolute whirlwind! Since the Texas Freethought Convention and revealing my position of atheism publicly after seven years incognito, multiple opportunities and new friendships have befallen me. From becoming an assistant organizer for the Houston Atheists, to blogging, writing book reviews for the Friendly Atheist, attending [...]
Reasonable Interactions
As reported by Billy Hallowell from The Blaze, Glenn Beck’s biased conservative news & opinion site that consistently attempts to drive a wedge between religious and secular groups/organizations: Atheists are coming to Washington, D.C., en force. We already told you about the so-called “Reason Rally,” which is being dubbed a Woodstock for non-believers. The event, to be [...]
#nudephotorevolutionary
[Click for Update] There has been some concern expressed about my intent to participate in an upcoming calendar to support free-speech and women’s rights. I say ‘intent’ because it’s a call for submissions, and while I’m submitting a photo, entry is not guaranteed. The calendar is being created by activist and blogger Maryam Namazie in [...]
Freethought Social + Meetup!
Yesterday morning, representing the Houston Atheists, I joined roughly fifty other secular Houstonians for a freethought coffee social. The meetup was organized by the Houston Freethought Alliance, with a goal of bringing our groups together for secular fellowship. Scheduled to begin at 10:30am, this successful event continued well past the expected time of 1:30pm. There [...]
Reason Ra-Ra-Rally
This is my contribution to promote Reason Rally, and it’s also an entry in a related contest. Head over to YouTube & officially ‘like it,’ if you do. Thank you!
The Faithful Phenomenon
Guest Post by Homer Carroll I’d like to call your attention to a mind-bending social psychological phenomenon. There is a communication symbol, a word, that people use every day and it has no definition. I’m talking about ‘GOD’. When a group of faithful people gather and talk about their god, they pass ambiguous information back [...]
Attack of the Theocrats
UPDATE: Full Review on the Friendly Atheist This past October, I went to the TX Freethought Convention & watched Sean Faircloth speak, afterward, I headed straight to the bookstore & bought his first book- Attack of the Theocrats. This book addresses issues that are happening right now & I highly recommend it for anyone, atheists [...]
