Women are 26% more likely to feel unwelcome, discriminated against, or harmed in the secular movement. (More stats in the article)

I have never been to an atheist convention. I have been reading the various blogs that discuss sexual harassment and have found this to be very disturbing. The idea that women are being harassed at all at such a convention is wrong, the idea that it is happening to such an extent that it has created this firestorm of internet activity is shocking to me and saddening. Women should be able to attend these conferences without having to worry about being propositioned sexually or harassed in any other way. Period. End of Story. I am glad that this topic is getting as much attention as it is.

I am on no one's list of "cool" attendees. But it was not until I went to a conference that I found "my people." I wear my "frack you" t-shirt and get high-fives. I get excited about cosmology and no one asks me if I can cut their hair. I have never felt excluded at a conference--I've gone alone lots of times and always found friendly people to talk to and sit with. Sexual harassment is a problem and I am glad to see it getting the attention it deserves so everyone can be comfortable and safe.

I was not trying to dismiss serious concerns and even stated such, but I do think that a real atmosphere of fear has been created here and that too needs to be addressed. Serious concerns should be addressed privately whenever possible. But the atmosphere of fear has been going on now for awhile and I personally just don't feel comfortable in these types of cliques.

It seems weird to me that he feels this way. I have never attended a conference but I have also never heard of there being so much drama that I would not attend one.
I am not saying that he has to be a part of the solution to the problems that may occur at conferences but he certainly doesn't have to abstain from attending just because of them either.
